God's Expectation to a Servant:

1.         To be Christ-like:
Jesus Christ set the example for his disciples in being a willing servant.  The truly Christ-like person is a willing servant done out of the gifts of love and abilities given by the spirit.

Luke 6:46
"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?"

John 13:15-17
"For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these   things, blessed are you if you do them."

2.         Serving to please God:

Col 3:22
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

Col 3:23
Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.

3.         Serving not working:

Mat 6:1
"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven."

4.         Taking up his cross to follow Jesus:

Mat 16:24
"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."

5.         It is impossible for a servant to serve two masters:

Luke 16:13
"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

6.         Other Expectation to a servant:
Faithfulness, Righteousness, Purpose-filled, Evangelism for Christ

The list of expectations outlines the story of Jesus' life as recorded in the gospels.

In the old day, a servant was treated as a slave. A slave does not have the freedom to determine his/her own life. It is all determined by the master of the slave. A slave must follow the instructions from his/her master, what to do, where to go, how to do, what to say, where to stay. In the other word, a slave must obey to and fear of his/her master totally. The master can even sell and control the life of the slave.

In the modern day, a servant is treated as a worker. A worker is to sell the service to the employer and will receive the compensation often in money. A servant has the right of freedom. He/she can decide whether to provide the service or not. It is usually agreed in a verbal/written contract. A servant must follow the contract to fulfill/deliver the agreed services including the obedience to the instructions of employer/supervisor. However there are government laws to protect the workers in most places of the world.

In Bible, a servant must totally obey to and serve his/her master. It is because God wants the servant to serve his/her earthly master wholeheartedly as if "serving the Lord not men". (Ephesians 6:5-8). It continues, "God will reward everyone for whatever good he does".

I never have a servant at home. If I had, I would expect the servant to help me to do things meeting my expectations. Those things were agreed between us. I would allow my servant to determine the ways to do things as long as he/she does not disrupt my daily routine.

For the servant in our faith, we must totally submitted to our God like Jesus submitted to our heavenly Father, dying on the cross (Philippians 2:6-11). Furthermore "whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all."(Mark 10:43-45) We should follow the life of Jesus "not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many". As a result we may be humble to serve others as Jesus set an example to us to wash His disciples' feet. (John 13:1-17)
