As someone who has attended church for quite a long while, I admire the steadfast hope that most respondents still hold for an ideal "church".  My opinion is:  No matter how sincere or noble the hope, no matter how many Bible verses you quote, the ideal will just remain an ideal.  It is not going to actualize.

I also admire the frankness and courage of Siu L H to share his disappointment.   But are we to totally give up with the institutional "church"?

Richard Rohr, in many of his books, especially in "Falling Upward, the Spirituality of the two Halves of Life"  gives his explanation about these issues.

Now, back to my ideal "church".  It's the normal, typical church but having the courage and capability to admit its limitations, so that it's members will not have unrealistic expectations about its holiness or spiritual power.  The members are thus driven back/freed to find God as their primary focus themselves.  The church will honor that and facilitate that process.

On the other hand, most churches right now seem to enjoy their privileged "holy" position that demands the members' devotion.  They seem to say "Devoted to me equals devotion to God; have me as your primary focus and you'll find God in the process; give most of your time or energy to me-that will make you whole and holy...."  I doubt if that is biblical.   Furthermore, if that continues for long, most church-goers will lose the drive or the ability to know/find God themselves.

The scenario is both frustrating and confusing, for the church-builders as well as for the church-goers.

In my imagination an ideal church should have characteristics:

  1. Have true love between brothers and sisters, love without condition.
  2. Members willing to dedicate their time and ability to get involve in church activities.
  3. People gather in church not because of some Star Speaker or Pastor but because in their own will to learn more about God and His words
  4. Can improve my spiritual life

The word "church" to me, as a christian, is so culturally familiar. Every Sunday morning, I speak to my wife and say "let's go to church". You see, to me, the church is something I can go to as in a specific event, location, or organized group. "Church" is like a word that identifies a location or an institution.

I do not like the idea that those who gather on Sunday mornings to watch a praise concert and listen to a gifted teaching are part of the church and those who do not, are not. Is it important to be where we are on Sunday morning or how we are living in Christ and with other believers all week long?

Sometimes, I am deeply disappointed by the state of organized Christianity or religious institution. Most of what we call "church" today are nothing more than well planned performances with little actual connection between believers. Believers are encouraged toward a growing dependency on the system or its leadership. The longer I have attended the "church", I find it is far more easier to sit through a finely tuned service and go home without ever having to open up our life or care about another person's journey.

I am not excited to attend a religious institution but rather to look for a small group of believers who chooses to walk together for a bit of the journey by cultivating close friendships and learning how to listen to God together. I am eager to find any other believers who share my hunger in spirit.

I want to rediscover the meaning of "church".

There are many factors contributing to a church that can be considered ideal and a few of them are listed below.
  1. All members must be unified in Christ. Division is most detrimental to the growth of a church.
  2. Be humble, patient, and submissive. Love each other and live a holy life.
  3. Willing to share what you have. Here I do not mean just wealth and physical properties, but also the talent that God has given us.
  4. A good mix of young and old members (like Paul and Timothy). Younger Christians can learn from older and more mature Christians. Seasoned members need young blood to carry their torch by becoming future leaders.

My Ideal Church is as the following:
1.  Love each other
Every Brother & Sister-in-Christ share the happiness & suffering together.
2.  Pass the religion from generation to generation
  The flow should be non-stop.
3.  Carry out the mission together
We need to obey our Lord & spread the Gospels together

In a word, we, as Christians, need to build up our relationship with God.  Then, we need to love each other.  Finally, we should work together to spread the Gospels.  If HCEFC can pass our religious belief from generation to generation, I will be very happy. Moreover, our Church will glorify our Lord too.
