  • Cost: drives us away from the willingness
  • Expectation: The outcome impacts our willingness to carry on.
  • Reward: raises our willingness
Example:
I want to make get along (or make friends) with a person with bad temper.

Cost: He may shout at me with bad words.  If I care for what he says, the cost is big.  If I cannot be easily hurt by others’ words, the cost is small.

Expectation: If we expect to change him, I will be out of our control and become very difficult and hence, not willing to do it.  However, if we look at it as an opportunity of our spiritual growth, we will be glad to face the challenge.

Reward: If the reward is to make a good friend with good temper, then the drive will die very soon.  If the reward is to please our Heavenly Father by trying His Words out, we will have a bigger drive.

"To be able to win oneself is a strong one"
"One's biggest enemy is oneself"

The most dominant factor to influence our decisions is 'the frightened part of our personality'.  Most of us aren’t even aware that it exists. It influences our decisions, consciously or unconsciously.  It even influences our perception that is the basis of our emotions and actions. It's the main reason for our compulsions and addictions.

It has many names.  The 'old self', the ego, the subconscious, the 'sinful nature'... (though they are not exactly the same).

Christ's love is the solution (1 John 4:18).  Sanctification, discipleship training, growth in Christ etc. is the process through which it's influence gradually decreases.

Romans 12:1-2
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

A decision to "let God" and renew oneself. And NOT let the old self call the shots, consciously or unconsciously.

1.    Factors that affect my choice

a.    Common Sense
e.g. If I am hungry, I will rather go to MacDonald than go to a barber shop.  Hence, in this case, I will pick the former as my destination.

b.    Consequence
e.g. If I sleep late on Saturday night, I may not wake up on time on the next morning and I may be late for the Sunday Worship.  Hence, in this case, I won't sleep late on Saturday night.

c.    Affected persons
e.g. If I do not cook, my husband and sons have nothing to eat for their meal.  Hence, in this case, I will cook for them as I love them.

d.    Other alternatives
e.g. If I do not buy this dress, I still have other dresses to wear.  Hence, in this case, I will not buy the dress.

2.    The golden rule for making choices

Philippians 2:5
"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus" <NIV 1984>

In a word, when we make choices, we should think about 'What Jesus will do at such situation'.

Jesus' attitude
a.    Jesus counts on Father (John 5:19)
b.    Jesus obeys Father's will (Matthew 26:42, Mark 14:36)
c.    Jesus loves Father (Mark 12:30)
d.    We follow Jesus to do good work (Ephesians 2:10)
e.    Jesus sets the guideline for us to do things (Micah 6:8)
